Donations, publicity & Ted’s back!

Donations, publicity & Ted’s back!
Working in a senior role for a Formula 1 team pre-season meant that Ted was in Spain and Bahrain for a month, and upon his return, we were glad to have him out training with us, although he was probably just happy to be back home to see his wife and two young boys. Seeing Neil and Chris clad head to toe in lycra wouldn’t have been what he was looking forward to on the plane journey back I’d imagine! Whilst Ted was away, the wives had built up a head of steam and had got together and come up with some fantastic ideas to raise money for GOSH. All of our charity events will be advertised on the blog and Facebook pages (the links are at the bottom of the blog here too). We have had some local press interest too so when the local paper decided to do an article, the wives jumped at the chance and with much trepidation, the husbands did as they were told! There we were, all lined up, cycling down the road, handle-bar to handle-bar, lycra, helmets, cheesy smiles and much laughter as the local photographer tried in vain to get the ‘action shot’. After all of that, it was a static photo that was taken of us all arm in arm on a Tuesday lunchtime on Charlotte and Ted’s driveway that made the final cut! Quite an experience! We’ve even been tweeting celebrities to help spread the word of what we’re doing on social media. To our surprise, we’ve had re-tweets from the likes of Jeff Stelling and most incredibly, Rubens Barrichello!
When we set up our Just Giving page, we had put in a rather adventurous target of £15,000 to raise, but you have to push yourselves and we agreed that if we could get anywhere near that target, we’d be very happy indeed. What we have been totally blown away with is people’s generosity. We still have just under 7 months to go and we have managed to raise over £1000 in total already from individuals and businesses.

Shock to the system!

Training began and this was to be a lot harder than first envisaged (in particular for Neil & Chris). Ted is by no means a ‘cycling novice’, however due to the nature and demands of his work at this time of year, he was to get out of the blocks and start training a lot later than Neil & Chris…this was a head start that they needed! Neil & Chris run their own businesses so the time that they could allocate to training was to be sporadic. None the less, initially, every spare moment was to be used and they were out on the road. It was a slow build up, especially for Neil. Chris had been jogging regularly for over 6 months beforehand so there was an element of fitness and stamina there which certainly helped. Neil had spent the last 5 years sitting in an office chair, then on the sofa at home with a drink in hand! The mileage started slowly, first a 5 mile circuit of the surrounding villages of Thornborough and Thornton, then an 8/9 mile route encompassing Nash and Beachampton. 20 odd miles a week was good, and obviously more than they had been doing before, but with 60 miles a day across 5 days as their target in Death Valley, this was just a warm up in comparison! A shock to the system indeed!

We are filling up a banner of a wall of sponsors bricks which will displayed at all of our events. It will be handed to Great Ormond Street Children’s Charity after our challenge.

Individuals can purchase a brick for £2 or £5 or £10 (or multiples of) and get your name on it. Please support us!

Businesses can advertise too, £50 or £100 or more. The bigger the donation, the bigger the brick. Email us your advert.

What charity and why?

All of us were unanimous in our decision that we were going to raise money for a charity and self-fund the project. The biggest decision we have had to make and will make throughout this whole process was to agree and choose a charity to raise money for. We all said that we would write down five charities send them to Charlottes email. We would then see if there was a charity that all of us had picked and go with that. Luckily the plan worked, and we had all put GOSH (Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital) as a nominated charity. We are all extremely proud to be representing such a fantastic charity that helps young children and we’ll be remembering what we’re doing the ride for every time we’re hurting during training and during the challenge!
